January 20 - Kathy and Steven’s Long Walk
In the summer of 2018 Kathy and Steven Light (of the Fyre and Lightning Consort) walked the entire Camino de Santiago, over 500 miles. Starting in France they climbed over the Pyrenees and continued west to Santiago de Compostela and onward to Finisterre (believed by the Romans to be the end of the known world). They will show pictures, talk about their experiences and play ancient and traditional music from the Camino, which has been a pilgrim route for over 1,000 years. Admission is by donation to benefit the Plainfield Opera House.
February 3 - Stellaria Trio
Hailed as “a force to be reckoned with” and “an ensemble of depth and cohesiveness” (The Times Argus), the Stellaria Trio presents a compelling pairing of standard and contemporary repertoire for their first performance at Plainfield Opera House including music by Haydn, Brahms and a 2003 composition by Jennifer Higdon.
March 17 - Sophie Michaux
From Cambridge, MA, and already know to many central Vermonters for her previous work in the area, mezzo-soprano Sophie Michaux accompanied by pianist Kai Ching Chang, will present Art and Folk Songs by Purcell, Mozart, Rossini, Poulenc and others in a riveting program of songs and arias from the baroque to the current day, including new compositions by Boston Composer Adam Simon, and audience-participatory singing!
March 31 - Mary Bonhag, Evan Premo, Annemieke Poelstra McLane and Jeremiah McLane
This very special performance will feature the founders and artistic co-directors of Scrag Mountain Music, Mary Bonhag (soprano) and Evan Premo (bass, viola da gamba) together with Annemieke Poelstra McClane (piano) and Jeremiah McLane (accordion). Mary and Evan are extraordinary and renowned musicians, and together they organize chamber music residencies and innovative and affordable concerts around VT. Annemieke Spoelstra is a classical pianist from the Netherlands; Jeremiah McLane is an accordionist from Vermont with a background in folk and jazz. Playing together since 2010, the Vermont-based husband-and-wife duo performs classical works by
European and South American composers who drew inspiration from folk melodies.
April 28 - The Will Patton Ensemble
Brazilian sambas, folk waltzes, gentle choros, Gypsy jazz and original compositions on mandolin, fiddle, guitar, bass and drums. An all-star lineup led by the one and only Will Patton.
May 19 - Heliand Consort
The Heliand Consort is a virtuoso woodwind & piano chamber music group that performs engaging classical music from the baroque through 20th century and contemporary repertoire. Recognized for its dynamic and creative programming, Heliand Consort is also distinguished by its commitment to audience engagement and the frequent inclusion of folk songs which complement the instrumental programs.
This performance is called Kindred Spirits: The letters and music of Brahms and the Schumanns — An exploration of the most intriguing musical love triangle through their letters and music.
Heliand Consort delves into the complex triangle that brought together three of the greatest musical minds of the Romantic Era. Through letters and music of Brahms and the Schumann’s Heliand offers a glimpse into their tragic and beautiful story of love, friendship and art. The program will include Robert Schumann’s Romances for Oboe and Piano, Brahms Sonata for Piano and Clarinet, and songs by Clara Schumann.
